A personal development goal in the work place helps leaders know how to manage employees and get increased productivity. It also helps them understand what needs to be done to bring about the required change that they seek. Employees can also benefit if they have their own personal development goal in the workplace. They may have a desire for promotion or improved remuneration and this will drive them to improve their skills and abilities, interpersonal relationship with their team members and increased productivity levels. Managers in the organisations may have goals that may require them to learn new skills in management, negotiation, human resources and conflict resolution.

A goal is an objective and the major focus of the organisation should be how to make employees happy, bring harmony among members of the teams which would enable them focus on the vision. The other is the need to make profits. These personal development goals should also meet the general criteria which are that they must be SMART, meaning SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, RELEVANT and TIME BOUND. When goals are set, it takes the organisation to the place of success, determines the type of risks and challenges to take and how to overcome them. The focus should be to pursue some simple goals and as they get achieved, the organisation sets higher and tougher goals.

I shall be discussing the effects which the goals of both employers and employees alike have on the workplace.


They include:
1. Increased level of Professionalism and Efficiency
Employees could have the goal of improving their level of professionalism on the job which would also affect their work output. Since this is their focus, it is important that they should be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to accomplish this. The desire to improve efficiency in operations can be achieved if the employers making the work environment suitable for their employees. This may be in terms of increased pay, training and better working conditions.

2. Effective Communication between Workers and Management
The above goal can be achieved if employees also make efforts to learn simpler and better ways of communication that would help the realization of their goals. Communication is vital for the smooth running of any organisation and this is important at the level of workers and with the management. The employers should also make the channels of communication flow open in order for this to be achieved. An ineffective communication system could lead to lower productivity levels and de-motivate employees. The focus of both parties should be on improving their system of communication for the overall benefit of the organisation.

3. Increasing Production Levels with Minimum Resources
Organisations would like to utilize fewer resources to achieve better production. Avoiding wastage is one of the ways that they can maximize profits. This is achievable carries their employees along in order to drive its vision. Employers would not be able to achieve this without the employees so both parties should be ready to work together. They should work together as partners for their common good.

4. Reducing Stress at Work
Employers may have this as one of their goals to enable their workers have improved productivity but with reduced stress levels. They can achieve this by making the work environment conducive and comfortable for them, introducing technology to make reduce the stress that is involved in some of its production processes. The employees also can learn how to prioritize their work schedule in order to become stressed when there is pressure. They should also learn how to manage their time and resources efficiently to increase production output. Working as a team would also help in reducing stress in their work. 5. Building an Identity
Employees who desire to get promoted or get increased pay may desire to improve their levels of expertise and skill. This can be achieved by acquiring more knowledge and learning new approaches that would make their work easier. An employee who puts in more efforts to his work would get noticed by his employers and would be rewarded. It may take time but eventually they would be recognized for their efforts.

6. Prioritizing
Employers should be able to set the right priorities if their business would grow. They may decide to focus on improving the work environment so that the output of workers would become better or they may give them increased remuneration. They could also plan regular training programmes that would help them learn new things and enhance their skill levels. Prioritizing what needs to be done and at what time is very important. Employees should also learn this skill as it would increase their level of output in the organisation. It is necessary for them to set priorities because this could be determinant between the success and failure of the organisation.

7. Developing Strength and Expertise
Employees could engage themselves in making efforts to improve their areas of strength as this will also affect their productivity levels positively. There should be a drive to learn new things and become experts in one area or the other. If employees set their hearts to improving skill, they become known and whenever the need arises, they would be called upon to offer solutions. This could lead to promotions and pay rises.

8. Developing Ethical Standards
Setting ethical standards in the workplace is a good goal and this helps in developing honest and reliable employees. The organisation also benefits from this as there would be fewer losses in the operation process. The employers should also put in place a system of reward for their employees that have good work ethics and integrity.

9. Learning to Listen Effectively
Employers would benefit more when they are able to listen to their employees more. This is good communication system that enables them understand the feelings of their workers better. There should be interactive sessions between both parties to discuss issues that would help improve the business.
